Dress code guide
Smart casual
Also written Smart casual attire, Smart casual dress code, Smart-casual
Relaxed clothes chosen with care, for dinners, dates and creative offices.
What it means
Smart casual means relaxed clothes chosen and worn with polish: dark jeans or chinos with a crisp shirt, fine knit or blouse, an optional blazer, and clean leather shoes or minimal sneakers. It is dressier than casual and looser than business casual.

What smart casual really means
Smart casual has more gray area than any other dress code, so it helps to think of it as casual clothes held to a higher standard. Dark denim instead of faded. A crisp shirt or fine knit instead of a logo tee. Chinos with a soft blazer, a midi skirt with a good sweater, leather loafers or spotless sneakers. Nothing is formal, and nothing looks like you just rolled out of bed.
You'll see it on invitations to dinners, date nights, gallery openings and casual weddings, and in many creative and tech offices. Smart casual for men usually means chinos or dark jeans, a collared shirt or knit, and a blazer when the evening calls for it. Smart casual for women has more range: trousers, jeans, skirts and dresses all work when the fabric and fit look considered. The formulas below work for anyone, whichever side of the store you shop.
When you'll see it
- Dinner at a good restaurant or a friend's milestone birthday
- Date nights and first dates
- Creative, tech and startup offices, plus team dinners
- Gallery openings, theater and daytime events
- Relaxed weddings, engagement parties and brunches
- Resort and cruise dining rooms with an evening dress code
- Networking events billed as casual
Smart casual for women
Smart casual for women pairs one relaxed piece with one polished one: dark jeans with a silk blouse, a knit midi dress with leather boots, wide-leg trousers with a fine sweater. A soft blazer or good cardigan adds structure, and shoes should look clean and intentional.
Lengths: Nearly any length works: knee, midi and maxi skirts and dresses are all smart casual. Minis lean casual or night-out, so add opaque tights and a longer layer if you wear one. Jeans and trousers can be full-length, ankle or cropped, as long as the hems are neat, not frayed. Petite frames look balanced in a midi that ends just below the knee or has a slit; tall frames can wear true maxis and full-length wide-leg pants.
Outfits that work
- Teal silk button-front blouse, half-tucked into dark straight-leg jeans, with a cognac belt and tan suede loafers.
- Fine-gauge sweater, satin midi skirt and leather ankle or knee boots.
- Knit midi dress with a cropped denim or leather jacket and white leather sneakers.
- Plus-size option: a belted wrap dress in matte jersey or a printed midi shirt dress, with block-heel sandals or leather sneakers.
- Petite option: a cropped jacket over a fitted tee, high-rise straight jeans at ankle length, and pointed flats or low-heeled loafers. The high rise and short jacket make your legs look longer.
- Summer option: linen-blend wide-leg trousers, a fitted ribbed tank, an open linen shirt as a layer and flat leather sandals.
- Fabrics
- Dark denim with little or no stretch
- Merino, cashmere and cotton knits
- Silk, satin and crisp cotton shirting
- Linen and cotton-linen for warm days
- Suede and leather for jackets and skirts
- Ribbed knit and substantial jersey for dresses
- Shoes
- Loafers and ballet flats
- Leather ankle boots and knee boots
- Minimal white or black leather sneakers
- Flat or block-heel leather sandals in summer
- Mules and slingbacks
- Accessories
- A leather crossbody or structured shoulder bag
- Gold or silver hoops, a pendant or thin stacked rings
- A leather belt with a simple buckle
- A silk scarf at the neck or tied to your bag
- Good sunglasses
Smart casual for men
Smart casual for men starts with dark jeans or chinos and a shirt with a collar or a fine knit. Add an unstructured blazer when you want to look sharper, and wear loafers, suede chukkas, derbies or clean white sneakers. No tie required.
Outfits that work
- Light blue oxford shirt, navy unstructured blazer, stone chinos and brown suede loafers.
- Chambray shirt under a navy shawl-collar cardigan, gray wool trousers and suede chukka boots.

- Big & tall option: a dark overshirt over a fine-gauge knit, straight-leg dark jeans with a clean hem, and leather derbies. Tonal colors and a straight fit keep the look long.
- Dark indigo jeans, a crisp white shirt, a brown suede jacket and leather Chelsea boots.
- Fabrics
- Oxford cloth, poplin and chambray
- Cotton twill for chinos
- Dark, clean denim

Color, time and season
Getting the details right
Smart casual has more room for color than office codes. Build on navy, stone, olive, camel, gray and white, then let one piece carry a stronger shade such as rust, teal, burgundy or cobalt. Subtle prints, stripes, checks and textured knits all work; loud logos and neon don't. For the most flattering result, put your best season color near your face, in the shirt, blouse or sweater, and keep the pants neutral.
Summer
Linen shirts, camp collars, lightweight chinos, midi dresses and leather sandals all fit. Tailored shorts that end just above the knee can work at relaxed daytime events, but not at dinner.
Winter
Switch to merino and cashmere, wool trousers, dark denim, ankle boots and a wool overcoat or structured jacket. A knit dress with tights and boots is an easy one-piece answer.
Venue
A restaurant or cruise dining room that asks for smart casual usually means no shorts, tank tops, flip-flops or athletic wear. At work, smart casual may allow jeans and sneakers daily, so check whether client days call for more.
Day vs evening
Daytime smart casual can be lighter: white sneakers, linen, soft colors. For evening, go darker and sharper with a blazer or leather jacket, leather shoes or boots, and a silk or satin piece.
Etiquette
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Pair one relaxed piece with one polished piece.
- Choose dark, well-fitted denim with no rips or fading.
- Keep sneakers spotless and minimal.
- Tuck or half-tuck tops to keep the outfit tidy.
- Bring a blazer or structured jacket when unsure; it comes off easily.
- Put fit first: hemmed pants and shoulders that fit matter more than labels.
Don't
- Don't wear athletic shorts, track pants or training shoes.
- Leave logo tees and slogan prints for the weekend.
- Avoid flip-flops and pool slides, even in summer.
- Don't wear ripped, faded or baggy jeans.
- Avoid anything stained, pilled or badly wrinkled.
- Don't default to a suit and tie; it can look overdressed.
Compared
Smart casual vs. other dress codes
Smart casual vs. business casual
Business casual is office-focused and more conservative: chinos or trousers, collared shirts and blouses, with denim only where the employer allows it. Smart casual is social and accepts dark jeans, fashion sneakers and more color by default.
Smart casual vs. dressy casual
Dressy casual is party-minded and a half step dressier, so sneakers are rarer and a dress or sport coat is the default. Smart casual accepts clean sneakers and denim more readily.
Smart casual vs. cocktail attire
Cocktail attire is clearly dressier: suits, often with ties, and cocktail dresses with heels or dressy flats. Smart casual never needs a tie or a party dress.
Questions
Smart casual FAQ
What is the difference between smart casual and business casual?
Business casual is more conservative and built for the office; smart casual is more relaxed and built for social settings. Business casual usually means trousers or chinos, collared shirts or blouses and leather shoes, with denim only where allowed. Smart casual welcomes dark jeans, knit polos, fashion sneakers and more color and texture.
Can you wear sneakers with smart casual?
Yes, if they're minimal and spotless. Low-profile leather sneakers in white, black or tan work with chinos, dark jeans, midi skirts and knit dresses. Running shoes, bulky athletic sneakers and scuffed canvas pairs don't. At a nicer dinner or evening event, loafers, boots or low heels look sharper.
Are jeans smart casual?
Yes. Dark, clean jeans with no rips or fading are a smart casual staple. Choose a straight or slim fit hemmed to your shoes, and pair them with something polished: a blazer, a silk blouse, a crisp shirt or a fine knit. Light-wash, distressed or baggy jeans push the outfit into plain casual.
Is a polo shirt smart casual?
Yes. A solid knit polo, especially one with a structured collar or fine texture, is smart casual. Wear it with chinos or tailored trousers and loafers or leather sneakers. Athletic polos with big logos or shiny fabric look more like golf or gym wear than a dinner outfit.
Can you wear shorts for smart casual?
Sometimes, at daytime events in warm weather. Tailored cotton or linen shorts that end just above the knee can work with a collared shirt and loafers. For dinner, the office or any venue with a posted dress code, choose chinos, trousers, a skirt or a dress. Athletic and cargo shorts are always too casual.
Is a T-shirt smart casual?
A plain, well-fitted T-shirt can be, when the rest of the outfit is sharper. Wear a crisp white or navy tee under an unstructured blazer or leather jacket, with dark jeans or tailored trousers and leather shoes. Skip graphic tees, thin fabric and visible wear. On its own, a T-shirt reads as casual.
