What formal attire really means
Formal attire is one of the broadest phrases a host can put on an invitation, and it often overlaps with black tie optional. In practice, formal attire at an evening event means you should look more dressed up than you would for cocktail attire. For women, that points to a long gown, an elegant midi or dressy evening separates. For men, it means a dark suit and tie at minimum, with a tuxedo welcome after dark.
Context shapes the details. Formal wedding attire at a 7 p.m. ballroom reception leans long and dark; the same code at a 1 p.m. garden ceremony allows lighter colors and midi lengths. Formal attire for women

Color, time and season
Getting the details right
Evening formal looks best in deep, rich colors: navy, black, charcoal, burgundy, emerald, sapphire and deep plum. For a daytime or spring formal wedding, dusty pastels, soft florals and lighter jewel tones feel fresh while staying elegant. Metallic fabrics and beading suit evening and winter events. Men stick with navy, charcoal or black. As at any wedding, white and ivory belong to the couple; at weddings where red is the traditional bridal color, as in many Chinese and South Asian celebrations, leave red to the couple as well.
Evening
After 6 p.m., go long and dark: gowns or formal midis, and a dark suit or tuxedo with black shoes.
Daytime
Before 5 p.m., formal leans lighter. Midi lengths, softer colors and a navy suit with brown oxfords are all correct.
